Rust Constructors, a Washington Group International subsidiary, has been awarded its second national safety award in less than a year. Associated Builders and Contractors, an organization of more than 24,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms across the U.S., has honored Rust with a National Safety Excellence Award. Birmingham-based Rust Constructors is a merit shop construction and maintenance company that provides construction, construction management, construction consulting, and other services including small capital project support. The company was also named one of America's 10 Safest Companies by Occupational Hazards in 2006.
ASU's school of construction will recruit women to overcome shortage
With Arizona's construction industry desperately seeking ways to increase its ranks of skilled workers, the Del E. Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University has taken initiative to overcome this shortage. The school is set to enroll its largest number of women ever this fall, largely due to the efforts of Melissa Luna, its new female recruiter. The school currently has a total student population of 375 males and 43 females and has been growing at an 11% annual rate. By 2014, the state of Arizona could be short 40,000 construction employees due to an aging labor force that is set to retire and a lack of interest, especially among women, in pursuing careers in skilled crafts.
Leopardo Construction will build Greenbuild Chicago 2007 Legacy Project
Leopardo Construction has been selected by the city of Chicago and the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Chicago Chapter as the general contractor for its Greenbuild Chicago 2007 Legacy Project. The 2007 Greenbuild Expo will be held in Chicago, and this year's Legacy Project is the expansion of the Chicago Center for Green Technology, a nationally-recognized green building with a platinum LEED certification.
